Shimoseka-2

Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn't Exist (下ネタという概念が存在しない退屈な世界, Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai), officially abbreviated as Shimoseka (下セカ) in Japan, is a Japanese light novel series written by Hirotaka Akagi and illustrated by Eito Shimotsuki. The light novel series was eventually adapted into a manga series and an anime series, which was directed by Youhei Suzuki.

Synopsis

It's 16 years after the "Law for Public Order and Morals in Healthy Child-Raising" banned coarse language in the country. Tanukichi Okuma enrolls in the country's leading elite public morals school and is soon invited into the Anti-Societal Organization (SOX) by its founder, Ayame Kajou. As a member blackmailed into joining by Ayame, Tanukichi ends up taking part in obscene acts of terrorism against the talented student council president and his crush Anna.

Light Novel

The light novel series had 11 volumes which were published by Shogakukan from July 18, 2012 to February 18, 2016. One extra volume was also published on July 20, 2016.

Manga

From March 28, 2014 to February 5, 2016, the Monthly Comic Blade serialized Shimoneta and even published a manga for the series, titled "Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai: Man**-hen (下ネタという概念が存在しない退屈な世界 マン●篇)", which had 4 volumes with 23 chapters in each volume. It ran from February 18, 2015 to April 9, 2016.

Anime

On October 16, 2014, Shogakukan, the publishers of the light novels, announced that the series would be adapted into an anime. On January 25, 2015, it was revealed that the anime would release in July of the same year. On February 17, 2015, J.C.Staff announced that they would animate the new series, and also revealed some of the cast. On June 28, 2015, less than a week before the first episode aired, the preview for the first episode was screened at Yebisu Garden Place.

The first episode of the series was first broadcast on Tokyo MX1 on July 4, 2015 in Japan. New episodes of the anime aired weekly every Saturday on several Japanese television channels, including AT-X, Tokyo MX, and KBS, among other channels. Twelve episodes of the series were produced, with the final episode airing on September 19, 2015. Each episode is about 23 minutes and 40 seconds long. In North America, the anime was licensed by Funimation and was dubbed in English. The English dub was announced on August 12, 2016 and released in Blu-ray and DVD form on November 29, 2016, and in Digital form on September 25, 2018. The anime can also be streamed on Funimation and Crunchyroll. Kazé also produced the German sub and dub and the French sub. As of today, a second season has not been announced or even teased, and it is unlikely that there will ever be a second season due to several factors, including lack of popularity.

Cast

Satire

The series' biggest topic is censorship, which is a big issue amongst sexual media in Japan. Shimoneta satirizes Japan's laws by showing how society would look if censorship went too far. Everyone in the series is forced to wear a Peace Maker, which can track if people are up to any dirty activities. The satire is pushed even further in the English sub. Any dirty word said by a character is replaced with a sound effect and any dirty visual content is censored with stickers of various characters. However, the English dub removes most of the censorship.

Perhaps the most clever piece of satire comes with Sophia Nishikinomiya. Sophia pushed for stricter censorship laws to keep everyone, especially her daughter, Anna, morally pure. However, it had the exact opposite outcome, as Anna's lack of knowledge about love caused her to become a sex-crazed psychopath who will stop at nothing to have some of Tanukichi's "love nectar". Ayame is the biggest opposer to these laws, and shows it with her alter-ego, Blue Snow. In "Techno Break", Ayame gives a speech explaining why dirty jokes are needed in their oppressive society:

"The very existence of dirty jokes is scorned by society as 'wrong' and 'evil'. But dirty jokes have a right to exist and be desired. I have a right to aspire to be one! Yes...we erotic terrorists have no choice but to be 'wrong'. If we act rashly, thinking we're in the right...And idealists who think a boring world where the concept of dirty jokes doesn't exist is right...We're no different from them! I mean, what's the point of dirty jokes anyway if they aren't 'wrong'? They're appealing because they're wrong. They excite us because we have to be secretive. Because they're devilish, they shine. Because they're twisted, they entice us. That is why I vowed to become the 'devil' to crush this boring world where the concept of dirty jokes does not exist!"
